Chapter Eight

I halted mid-pace, squinching my eyelids shut and scrubbing my hands over my face. I’d accepted the stunning convenience of Red’s stripper being a liminal—albeit so weak it hardly counted—but the rest of it? A little harder to get my head around. “Let me get this straight. You’re gonna get Shardonnay to call Red and beg him to come over, and then you’re gonna hide out in her bedroom—”

“I’ll be subliminal, of course,” Kade informed me.

I dragged my eyelids open. “Of course.” Yeah, riiight. Like my boyfriend being subliminal in the stripper’s bedroom made it all better. “And if Red shows—”

“When he shows,” Kade corrected.

“And when he shows, she’ll slip something into his drink. And then once they both, uh….” Dammit. I could feel my face heating. I was so gonna have to quit with all the blushing. “When they both—”

“Start heating up the sheets.” Kade made himself at home on my bed, sitting sideways with shoulders propped against the wall, calves dangling off the mattress.

“Right. That.” I sucked in a deep, bracing breath. “While they’re doing it, and he’s, ah, distracted, you’ll link with her. And when Red, um….” The heat escalated to what felt like flames licking my face. Oh. My. God. This was soooo embarrassing.

“When he climaxes,” Reilly put in helpfully, his tone indicating even he found my discomfort mildly amusing.

“Yes. That. His mental barriers will be down, leaving him wide open for Kade to do the psychic equivalent of sneaking in the back door to rummage through his dirty little secrets. And then, once Kade’s figured how Red….” I faltered, stomach knotting painfully at the mere thought of Red’s sickening ability.

Kade frowned. “You all right, Wren? If you need some rest—”

“It’s not that. It just occurred to me to wonder why we need to know how Red does what he does.”

“The mind-ream.”

I swallowed, uncomfortably aware of my sweat-dampened pits and clammy skin. “Yes. Wouldn’t it be better if that ability, you know, died with him?”

Kade’s frown deepened until it etched his forehead. His lips parted but it was Reilly who spoke. “He’s the reason Megan is… the way she is.”

My brother slid down the wall to sit, forearms propped on bent knees.

God. My knees turned noodle-limp and I backed up, missed the edge of the mattress, and ended up on the floor.

Behind me, I heard Kade curse beneath his breath. His hands grasped me beneath my armpits, tugging me sideways until I could lean against his calves. “There were rumors Red had reamed some girl and broken her mind,” he said, “but I didn’t know it was Megan. I thought she—”

“Went insane after an extended stay Between?” Reilly finished. “That’s exactly what happened. But Devos is the sole reason Megan risked phasing when she was low on energy and ended up stuck Between. He tried to control her mind—make her want him—but she fought back and escaped. And by the time I figured out what had happened and tracked her down to bring her back, it was too late.
